COVID-19 had a devastating impact on the restaurant business in Singapore and all around the world. Lockdowns and social distancing meant that dining establishments could not operate as usual. A March 2020 survey by F&B reservations service, Chope, found that more than 93% of restaurants said they had a decline in revenue, while 80% said they had to cut staff. Ultimately, many restaurant businesses were forced to shut as a result during the circuit breaker.

CNA documentary ‘For Food’s Sake!’ explores COVID-19’s impact on the local food industry in their brand new season. The debut episode ‘Wake-Up Call’ follows host and restauranteur Chef Ming Tan as he copes with his own business losses, and figures out how to save it.

His journey leads him to learn about digital solutions for F&B businesses and whether robots can truly replace cooks and servers. Check out his battle with Singapore’s first robot barista, Ella. Both Ming and Ella go head-to-head to see who can prepare gourmet coffee quicker and tastier. Who will emerge the winner?
